Our Queer Alabama

My name is Alex Reeder and I'm a leader with Our Queer Alabama, a project with Hometown Action. Our team has enjoyed meeting many of you at Pride events throughout the spring and summer! We are excited to update you on our current work and share ways to get engaged with Hometown Action projects statewide.

The #OurQueerAlabama storytelling project is shifting the narrative of what it means to be LGBTQ+ in Alabama by highlighting our real, authentic experiences. We are so grateful for the many people who shared stories with us! We will continue posting these awesome stories on Instagram at @OurQueerAlabama. Our next step will be creating local spaces to continue story sharing. If you have a story to share online or if you are interested in holding a queer storytelling gathering in your community, DM us on IG or email [email protected]

Our Queer Alabama leaders and Carbon Hill community members have been organizing a sustained response to anti-LGBTQ rhetoric by Carbon Hill Mayor, Mark Chambers. Mayor Chambers refuses to resign but has expressed willingness to collaborate on a non-discrimination ordinance protecting LGBTQ people and other marginalized communites. Read a recap by Hometown Action leader, Champagne Girten here

Hometown Action will continue to demand accountability from the city's elected officials. We're not going away and we're not giving up. Residents interested in getting involved with these efforts should contact K.C. Vick at [email protected]

Our Queer Alabama held the first ever Dolly Parton Bar Crawl in Alabama on July 13th in Montgomery. Over 50 people showed up in all their country glam and glory. We had a great time building community, celebrating our country queer self expression, and fundraising for our movement. Shout out to Kru on Mt. Meigs, Irish Bred, Common Bond, and Goat Haus Biergarten for opening up your space and offering specials to our community!

Thanks to your support, we raised $1500 for our work across the state! If you did not get in on the fun, it is not too late to support Our Queer Alabama’s fundraising efforts!

We are so grateful that you’re willing to commit time and energy to this movement! Our team looks forward to following up with you in the coming days. If you did not sign up with us during Pride but would like to be involved, please sign up here. The more, the merrier!
